Holding a Strong Image of the Educator: The Teacher as Researcher, Risk-taker, and Creative
In this session, we will reimagine the role of the teacher as one where the curiosity and wonderment of childhood inform a multitude of classroom practices. As researchers, we observe and document alongside children on their quests for knowledge and experience. As risk-takers, we invite dialogue and the sharing of ideas to support us in developing new and innovative methods to approaching learning. As creatives, we bring our aesthetic sensibilities and creativity into our learning environments through the use of the Hundred Languages. Inspired by Reggio practices, we will explore how teachers can guide and extend deep and meaningful classroom inquiries and investigations that offer children opportunities for participation, imagination, and collaboration.

Loose Parts Desserts
Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways, empowering a creative imagination. You'll find loose parts in many early childhood classrooms, ready to be explored and experienced. One family in our community even celebrates Shabbat by creating "Loose Parts Desserts" at their table with special treats. We've been inspired by this ingenuity and the best ways to come together around open ended materials and shared experiences (and cocktails too!) Join the Sheva Center team from JCC Association for a fun and interactive loose parts desserts extravaganza with sweets and treats and all things delicious!

Becoming Present Using Improvisation
Learn how pioneer drama educator Viola Spolin developed her Theater Games at a Chicago settlement house in the 1930s. Ed Reggi demonstrates her best practices. Viola Spolin called her teaching methods non-authoritarian, non-verbal, and non-psychological. She believed cultural and familial authorities often use approval and disapproval to control others, limiting the student's capacity for experience. Her evaluation methods instead involve the whole group in a non-judgmental process that allows students to learn for themselves. Explore her sidecoaching techniques that support your learners' social and problem-solving skills.

Breathing New Life into Jewish Holiday Curriculum: Planning through the Process of Backwards Design
The start of a new school year is just around the corner and with it comes many Jewish holidays arriving one after another. Planning for holiday experiences can easily align with more emergent and authentic approaches to teaching and learning and the process of “Backwards Design” is a tool to assist you in breathing new life into your approach to holiday curriculum. Through deepening your knowledge of the holiday, uncovering the big ideas underlying it, and developing powerful “essential questions” for ourselves and the children, you’ll find that deeper, and more meaningful experiences evolve for children and families.  Stepping back and thinking together requires dedicated time - time that is hard to come by when each week brings another holiday. So join me this summer as we think ahead and apply the process of Backwards Design to the celebration of Sukkot and hopefully breathe new life into your thinking and curriculum for this meaningful fall holiday.

Meaningful Meetings: Deconstructing and Reconstructing Circle Time through a Constructivist Lens
The ability to listen, respond, and be changed by another person’s perspective is essential in the daily life of a learning community. Meetings among all the members of the community—between children, between adults, between children and adults—connect us and move us forward. Using stories from classrooms (infants-age 5), teachers’ and children’s collaborative research on this topic, inspiration from the Reggio approach, and through the lens of kedusha (holiness), we will look beyond traditional constructs of “circletime” to meaningful learning through perspective sharing, problem solving, and shared planning during the class meeting.

CRAVING WINDOWS
Craving Windows tells the story of curiosities born during Covid lockdown that launched a long-term investigation of technology in an early learning classroom. We invite you to join Josh and Stephanie, our two Denver, Colorado educators on their Masa (journey) of using experiential methods to open up new learning frontiers.  This is a deep look into the possibilities of co-constructed worlds, exploring technology's role in supporting story acting, expanding play, developing partnerships with families, fostering intergenerational experiences, international expeditions and opening windows to places and people, near and far.
Craving widows at its heart is not just about technology; it's about the openings that reveal themselves when we allow ourselves to embrace dissonance and uncomfortable circumstances. See what happens when we go against the grain, swim upstream, and head straight into what we once perceived as forbidden territory.

Creating a Socially and Emotionally Responsive Classroom
The physical classroom environment shares our school's values with children and families. Yet, recently, it has been harder than ever to create an environment that is developmentally appropriate for young children and truly responsive to their needs. During our time together, we will explore principles of setting up a classroom, as well as strategies to incorporate social and emotional learning into rhythm of a school day and the physical space. You will leave this session with new tools and ideas about how to start the year in a way that can truly meet your students where they are.

Elevating our Planning: Seeing the Children and the Possibilities
This presentation will be focused on deepening teachers’ understanding of planning through a social-constructivist, Reggio-inspired lens and will rest on the value of building a democratic culture in the classroom as well as values through a Jewish lens. Using examples from the classroom, we will discuss the role of the teacher in recognizing key moments in the children’s dialogues and actions, reacting with joy, wonder, and engagement in the insights and theories of the children, and building on thinking through the use of provocation and documentation.

Raising the Next Generation of Mensches: Filling Your Anti-Bias Toolbox
Our society is in the midst of a social justice awakening and as Judaism teaches through the concept of Tikkun Olam, we have a responsibility to contribute to repairing our broken world.  As Jewish ECE educators we can help lay a foundation for a more just and equitable society by supporting children to become mensches – good human beings, who actively resist prejudice, discrimination and bias against all types of diversity.  Learning about the four goals of  Anti-Bias Education can give you the tools to do this with intentionality. Join me as we explore the four goals of Anti-Bias Education and learn about everyday things early educators can do to build children’s positive identity, support them in developing positive attitudes around diversity, recognize unfairness and speak up for the rights of others. If not now, when?

That One Conversation that Changed Everything
Remember that time you had a difficult conversation with a colleague or parent in your classroom.

Or, do you remember that time that you avoided a difficult conversation with a colleague or parent in your classroom?

Join this session to explore:
  • The “What Happened?” conversation.
  • The “Feelings” conversation.
  • The “Identity” conversation.
How should you prepare for each of these conversations? How do you find the right words in the moment? And, how can you manage the conversation so that it goes as smoothly as possible? How do you engage with kavod/respect for the other?

One good conversation can shift the direction of change forever.
